The Great American Crawl at Wolf Caves & Katemcy Rocks, TX – Double Header

For this trip, we made our way out to Mason, Texas, to hit two incredible off-road parks. We spent March 6th and 7th at Wolf Caves Off-Road Park, followed by March 8th and 9th at Katemcy Rocks Offroad Park. Both parks had so much to offer and were an absolute blast to wheel around! A few days before the event, we rolled into Mason to start preparing. Thursday morning at Wolf Caves, we opened up our booths and began registration. After plenty of long-overdue hellos, catching up with familiar faces, and meeting new ones, we kicked things off with a drivers’ meeting where we covered difficulty levels and went over safety guidelines.

Our group chose to tackle “T-Rex”, a trail notorious for its challenging dif-stoppers. It features some of the more difficult lines in the park but offers a rewarding experience. After conquering the climb, we made our way toward the infamous flagpole, opting to descend the side of “T-Rex” —a route some say is nearly as challenging as going up! Near the flagpole, a few team members got hung up on nearby obstacles. These obstacles were no joke, with large boulders shifting under tires when you least expected it. We had to pull winch a few times, pulling twice within 30 feet for one of our team members. It made for a tricky but fun section of the day. Next, we headed over to “Finley’s Playground” , a wide-open area with various obstacles. One highlight was a small canyon with a tight entrance, more easily handled by our two-door rigs. Not to be outdone, several of our four-door drivers took on the challenge, successfully making it through with help from experienced spotters and a bit of winching. We spent a good chunk of time at Finley’s before wrapping up for the day and regrouping to debrief.

March 7th was another fantastic day. Our team split up to wheel alongside different groups, and we’re grateful to all the trail leads who made this such a memorable crawl. After a full day on the trails, the general feeling was one of accomplishment—many drivers pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones to tackle tougher lines, all thanks to the encouragement and guidance of their leads.

March 8th took us to Katemcy Rocks, always a highlight thanks to the welcoming owners and challenging terrain. After the drivers’ meeting, our team headed straight to “Hannibal Lector”. We continued on to “Queen’s Throne”, followed by “King of the Hill”. After a quick lunch break, we squeezed in a few more trails before ending up at the infamous “Smokin’ Butthole”. This obstacle is no joke—a deep V-notch entrance leading into an even steeper, more intimidating V-notch at the top. Thanks to expert spotting and some creative use of tire sidewall tread, most of our crew made it up without issue. Thankfully, no one suffered severe damage or rollovers on this gnarly obstacle! With “Smokin’ Butthole” as our final trail of the day, we made our way back to camp for some well-deserved downtime. We wrapped up the event with raffles, warm and delicious chili courtesy of Mrs. Ashby, and goodbyes all around.

A huge thank you to the owners of Wolf Caves and Katemcy Rocks for hosting us, to Mrs. Ashby for the fantastic chili, to Andy for organizing such a great event, and to Mickey Thompson Tires for sponsoring and making tires available to participants.

We had an amazing time out in Mason and can’t wait to see everyone at the next one!
